Dr. David Heber answers questions about protein.
Q: I’ve never heard of “plant protein.” What is it?
A: Many plant foods such as soybeans, rice, corn and peas are rich sources of
protein. The soy protein contained in ShapeWorks ™ Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix is one of the
highest-quality proteins in the plant world, meaning that it contains the right
balance of amino acid building blocks, to provide the correct nutrition to the
cells of our body. Other proteins such as corn and beans must be combined in
order to attain the same nutritional value as soy. Also you save a lot of calories
by comparison to combinations of rice and beans or corn and beans; and even
more when compared to proteins from animals, which contain high fats.
Q: If protein is supposed to be filling, will it give me a “heavy feeling?”
A: Protein is the most satisfying of the major nutrients: carbohydrate, fat and
protein. It is fat that is more closely associated with a “heavy feeling” right
after eating rather than protein. However, as an important tip, it is important
to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water every day when you are using ShapeWorks ™
Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix and Formula 3 Personalized Protein Powder
to keep yourself regular and comfortable.
Q: Is there such a thing as “too much protein” in the diet?
A: You can get “too much protein” in the diet, but the body disposes of this
safely unless you eat well above the amount recommended by the U.S. National
Academies of Science Institute of Medicine, who suggest that no more than
35 percent of total calories come from protein. Plant proteins such as the soy
protein found in ShapeWorks ™ Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix do not have
the same negative effects on the body as animal proteins at higher levels.
